Little Stories from the Beach

A few years ago, I walked along New Brighton Beach every morning.
At sunrise, the shore was always full of new arrivals.
Driftwood and broken branches,
and a touch of someone’s imagination.

I saw similar little structures at Hokitika Beach, Gore Bay, and South Brighton.
Shacks made of driftwood, small shelters to rest for a while.
Touched by someone’s hands, temporarily complete,
they could warm your heart, and at the same time, make it ache.

I stepped inside one, sat down, and thought.
Was this just a playful creation,
or could it really serve as a home for someone for a night?

Along the beaches,
there are always hidden stories of someone’s day.

“Along the beach, there are hidden stories of someone’s day. Did you see that?”

Did you see that?”
